The Louisiana Wind Energy Hub will accelerate the growth of the state’s wind energy innovation ecosystem, support emerging companies, spur the development of novel technologies, and supply trained professionals to the rapidly expanding renewable energy sector. Located at The Beach at UNO, the Louisiana Wind Energy Hub is creating an innovation ecosystem - building on the offshore research expertise at the University of New Orleans, as well as Louisiana's energy and port infrastructure, supply chain resources and workforce.
Southeast Louisiana, through its port and offshore energy expertise, is ideally suited to be a leader in offshore wind energy. A variety of Louisiana companies and expertise in offshore structure design, manufacturing, shipping, and supply chain enabled the construction of the first wind farm in the US, the Block Island wind farm, off the coast of Rhode Island. The steel, foundations, and service vessels for the Rhode Island project were all manufactured in Louisiana. Wind turbine blades from GE are manufactured in New Orleans and UNO alumni are key employees at several of these companies, earning their critical training at the University. Now it's time to use local skill sets to position our region to set the standard for offshore wind energy in the gulf, beginning at the Louisiana Wind Energy Hub.
